Bell

Picture
The Bells were Whigs and inclined to be liberal.

Hugh Bell was arrested on suspicion of high treason because he entertained two Irish nationalists, who were plotting to get the French to invade Ireland. He got away with it, but was he lucky?

William, his son, had the most beautiful tenor voice in England, but though he sang at four coronations, he would not turn professional. His merchant firm went bust, but being well-connected, he was given a sinecure.

Francis Hayley Bell explored Egypt, Madagascar, Ethiopia and Russia, was mauled by a tiger in Pakhoi, befriended the Dalai Lama and spoke seven different Chinese dialects besides other languages. His daughter, Mary Hayley Bell, married the actor, Sir John Mills and was the mother of Hayley and Juliet.

William's children were interesting. George and Leonora ran homes for indigent children. Captain Evans Bell was sacked by Lord Canning for insubordination in India and immediately re-employed because Canning thought he was right. Valentine Graeme Bell got into hot water with the Governor of Jamaica because they disagreed about the design of railway embankments. After a question in Parliament, Valentine was exonerated.
