Harbottle

Picture
The Harbottles were wealthy landowners in Northumberland and later in Rutland. Harbottle Castle in Coquetdale was their fortress. Now there is little left of it but moss-covered stones.

BUT we don't know for certain that Ralph Harbottle of Egleton, Rutland, was the same man as Ralph Harbottle who lived in the parish of St. Olave, Southwark on the south bank of the Thames. If he was, we can trace our ancestry back to 1400.

The Harbottle's arms show three icicles, which probably reflected the   temperature in the castle!

Guiscard Harbottle was slain in combat with King James IV of Scotland at the Battle of Flodden.
